Director of STARTUP Marketing

The Role:

As 5&Vine’s first Startup Marketing Director, you’ll be responsible for owning marketing strategy and growth for a small portfolio of challenger brands. You’ll lead the development of their Go-To-Market plans that balance proven strategies to deliver results today, with experiments to enable the next phase of growth.

The role is all-encompassing, from launching products and services, growing the customer base and deepening engagement, to identifying new revenue opportunities, architecting fundraising pitch decks, and leading teams in campaign execution. You'll actively participate in reviews of content, design, SEO/SEM, social media, UX and all other deliverables. This is an exciting role that will expose you to several startups at once, the executive teams that passionately drive them, and the VCs that back them.

 
 

Specifically, you’ll contribute to the growth of 5&Vine’s clients through:

  • Ownership - Engaging as their marketing lead and owning their product and business as if it were your own.

  • Partnership - Collaborating with the executive team (namely CEO, Product, Sales) to align the marketing strategy with business goals.

  • Strategy - Identifying meaningful differentiators (price, product, customer support) to disrupt the market, then leading the development of a Go To Market strategy to win share from industry incumbents.

  • Growth - Creating their growth playbook and guiding interdisciplinary teams to execute with excellence.

  • Innovation - Assessing their business models and identifying new revenue opportunities within the context of brand, market, user, financial, and technology constraints.

  • Management - Leading the hiring and management of their marketing and growth teams.

In your first couple of months, you can expect to get an in-depth understanding of our playbook and put this into practice with clients. You will help co-author the future of our story at 5&Vine, and the stories of the startups you work with as they become increasingly known to, and respected by, the world.

Specifically, you can expect to engage with clients like these:

  • A disruptive Smart Home security company that is transitioning from DTC to Retail.

  • A fast growing EdTech company that is aggressively expanding its footprint and offering.

  • An ethical outerwear company that is scaling their business.


About You:

We know that we’re looking for someone who might be difficult to find. The right person for us will be at the center of a Venn diagram of: a startup marketer with a proven track record of growing brands, an excellent communicator that can establish and strengthen credibility with clients, and a challenger themselves that can engage as comfortably with budgets big and small. You also must care deeply about personal and business integrity, actively doing good, and being a good human.


You Should Have:

  • A scrappy, entrepreneurial approach (you see problems as opportunities and would rather build than read the handbook).

  • Curiosity and interest in understanding how our clients think and work (you are basically like a method actor, willing to get in our client’s shoes to dive deep into what it’s like to be them).

  • An uncanny ability to craft strong strategic messages and stories (preferably you’ll also need to be comfortable with guiding design and copywriting – at this stage, we’re an all hands on deck kind of team but have design and copywriting resources that are best directed by someone that can offer clear and concise feedback.

  • An aptitude for leading, motivating, and wrangling cross-functional teams to deliver on launch plans.

  • Creative and analytical problem solving skills (you’ll figure out new ways to do things where there is little precedent or data).

  • An obsession with data-driven decision making (you dig into root causes analytically, instead of relying on intuition alone).

  • History of tackling complicated problems, finding implementable solutions and seeing the implementation through to the end from the higher level strategy down to the nitty gritty details.

  • Experience in at least one startup marketing organization.

  • A team player; we all do what is needed to succeed. That includes developing an amazing challenger brand marketing strategy and it might mean digging deep into a drip email campaign.

  • Demonstrated ability to motivate, support and understand different project teams while anticipating, defusing and resolving any conflict effectively.

  • A growth mindset and be excited to improve yourself and ready to receive the gift of growth oriented feedback. You’re excited to learn and explore new areas of expertise, and to grow with the role and with 5&Vine.

  • Slight preference for Toronto but we’re open to remote.

director of startup PR & Communications

The Role:

As 5&Vine’s first Director of Startup Public Relations & Communications, you’ll be responsible for crafting and amplifying the stories of our startup clients. You’ll develop compelling product and business narratives and strategies to secure coverage for fast growing companies by engaging with the news media, influencers and customers. As a core member of the 5&Vine team, you will also actively shape the direction and trajectory of our company. 

This is an exciting role for someone driven to help make PR accessible and powerful for startups. You will work with companies across numerous sectors, their executives, and the VCs that back them.

You’ll contribute to the growth of 5&Vine’s clients through:

· Ownership - Engaging as a startup PR lead; owning product, business and leadership narratives as if they are your own.

· Strategy - Collaborating with the 5&Vine team to develop PR and communication strategies for our startup clients using PR and content marketing tactics.

· Impact - Driving growth by securing earned media and developing branded content and thought-leadership pieces.

· Innovation - Recognizing trends and proactively recommending new tactics, tools, and processes to continuously evolve and optimize client PR campaigns.

· Management - Defining client objectives and setting standards of excellence for all client activity by clearly communicating and managing expectations.

About You:

You are a creative PR leader with a proven track record of growing brands, an excellent writer/communicator, and a lover of scrappy, entrepreneurial environments. You have strong relationships with the media and the ability to transform technical information into easy-to-understand, compelling content. You also care deeply about personal and brand integrity, startups, and just being a good human.

What You Bring to the Table:

●     Experience writing and editing for different platforms and audiences. 

●     Ability to produce high-quality content for a range of channels (social, web, mobile etc.). 

●     Media relations expertise. You are adept at developing compelling media pitches and press releases, coordinating interviews, and facilitating communication between startups and the press.

●     Strong attention to detail, good judgement, and a commitment to understanding how clients, customers, and journalists think and work. 

●     A team player with an aptitude for leading, motivating, and wrangling stakeholders to deliver on communications plans.

●     Creative and analytical problem-solving skills. You figure out new ways to do things where there is little precedent or data and, whenever possible, you make decisions using data as opposed to intuition alone.

●     A growth mindset; open to constructive feedback. You’re excited to learn, explore new areas of expertise, and grow with the role and with 5&Vine.

●     5+ years of experience in PR, communications or media. Prior experience working with startups or companies in the tech space.
